Continuous Feed
02:50
|
|||
Headlines scroll on screens
Tallying the deceased
Posts and death tolls both rising like bodies in water
In one continuous feed
And you can’t help but to think
That maybe we don't need to split atoms
To assure mutual destruction
Each wrong hateful lie
Getting thousands of likes
You say that it's harmless; telling it like it is
When it's what you'd like it to be
Cause the truth's too ugly to see
So you go on playing with your toys
But it’s not play-acting Hatfields and McCoys
And you blame everything
Well - except for the thing
What's at fault is something you like less than the trigger
On this continuous feed
Firing off from the magazine
Firing off from the hate you speak
But it’s not those murdered that are the problem
Even if they had more melatonin
It’s the ones holding the guns
And the the ones defending them
And the ones defending the hate
Of race
Of faith
Of gender
Of gays
Of anything that makes you afraid
Upon which this continuous feed runs

Video Games Don't Kill
02:46
|
|||
Video games they don’t kill people
And playing video games won't kill people
But video games or not, people with guns kill people
Because to kill someone with a gun, you need a gun
Now if you haven’t learned the pattern yet
I guess we’ll keep on trying
Meanwhile the kids in all our schools will keep on right on dying
Guns aren’t the only problem - someone has to pull the trigger
But a gun’s what lies between the victim and the shooter’s fingers
Movies they don’t kill people
And watching movies won’t kill people
But inside movie theatres, people with guns kill people
Because to kill someone with a gun, you need a gun
Now if you haven’t learned the pattern yet
I guess we’ll keep on trying
Meanwhile the shoppers in our malls will keep on right on dying
Guns aren’t the only problem - someone has to pull the trigger
But a gun’s what lies between the victim and the shooter’s fingers
Drag queens they don't kill people
And loving drag queens won't kill people
Believe it or not, drag queens get killed by people
People threaten and murder drag queens with their guns
Now if you haven’t learned the pattern yet
I guess we’ll keep on trying
And marginalized people will just keep on right on dying
Guns aren’t the only problem - someone has to pull the trigger
But a gun’s what lies between the victim and the shooter’s fingers
If you haven’t learned the pattern yet
Maybe there's no point trying
Cause we're all tired of you blaming other things for all the dying
Guns are part of the problem and it won’t help pointing fingers
Just because it makes you feel safe from scary figures
When you aim
To keep everything the same
With a trigger in each finger

Newtown
03:02
|
|||
The camera feeds rolled, we knew what came next
In thirteen years we’d perfected each reflex
But there was a twist - caught us by surprise
The dead weren’t much older than five
Hey hey
This is a new
This is a new town
Hey hey
This is all new
We are all Newtown
You had bomb drills in the Cold War
Your teachers told you what you should fight for
And you may have feared for your own lives
But your peers weren’t gunned down inside
Hey hey
We know how to
We know how to lockdown
Hey hey
We know how to
Live in your Newtown
You’ve not seen a school since before Columbine
But you think you know the answer that is right
You want to give guns to the good guys
Who’s good depends on who decides
Hey hey
This is a new
This is a new town
Hey hey
This is all new
We are all Newtown
Hey hey
This is a new
This is a new town
Hey hey
You changed the rules
You made us Newtown

2am
04:03
|

Hands past the twelve up on the clock
Have marked the start of Sunday
As hands held in the parking lot
Hold bodies dancing away
They can’t do this everywhere
But in this nightclub they're safe
No one to say they don't belong
In this strangely sacred space
It's 2 AM and they're not home yet
But nobody is wondering if they're safe
It's 2 AM but they're not home yet
This is just what happens
This is just what happens
This is just what happens when you stay up late
Hands grip tightly upon the gun
And mark out too many fates
The sound suddenly overcome
With bullets, anger, and hate
People sense there’s something wrong
Then realize what has changed
They look for loved ones and run
In between them and harm's way
It's 2 AM and they're not home yet
But nobody is wondering if they're safe
It's 2 AM but they're not home yet
Is this just what happens
Is this just what happens
Is this just what happens when you stay up late
Hands tap out careful keyboard strokes
And mark the words of Sunday
Our thoughts and prayers with Orlando
And its victims but Monday
Forgetting why those lives were taken
Rights are taken away
Forgetting tar they painted us with
Paved this murderous way
Next 2 AM when they’re not home yet
Well now we all will worry if they're safe
Next 2 AM but they're not home yet
Is this just what happens
Is this just what happens
Is this just what happens when you're the queer they hate
You're the queer they hate
We're the queers you hate
We're the queers you hate
